To make you own inner tube box, first decide whether or not you'd like a design on the box. If you do, proceed to the first step. If not, jump to step 4. |

1. Download the GIF
image of the design. Right click on the thumbnail to the right and choose "Save
Target As" (in Explorer) or "Save Link As" (in Navigator) from the pop-up
menu that appears. Save the GIF file to a folder on your hard drive. It's a big file --
778 K -- so it may take a while depending on the speed of your modem. 2. Open the GIF in any photo editor such as Adobe PhotoShop or Microsoft Photo Editor. You can also insert the GIF on a blank page in a word processor such as Word or WordPerfect. Set up your printer to print 8-1/2" by 11" in the landscape mode, and size the GIF. It should cover the whole page, with about 3/8" top and bottom margins. For some printers, you may need to play around with the margins to get the design to print properly. For our Hewlett-Packard, we had to shift the design so the top margin was 1/4" and the bottom was 1/2". 3. Print out the GIF on card stock. Or print it out on ordinary paper, then paste it to a piece of thin pasteboard with rubber cement or spray adhesive. |

4. Fold the card stock or the pasteboard on the dotted lines. If you have decided not to fool with the GIF design, take a piece of card stock, turn it sideways, and measure down from the top edge 1/2", 2-3/4", 4-1/2", and 6-3/4". Draw horizontal lines at each mark, then fold at the lines. Here's a tip to help you make crisp, straight folds: Score the stock with the dull edge of a table knife. Don't cut through the stock; just crush the paper fibers along the line you want to bend. 5. There should be
a 1/2"-wide tab at the top of the stock. Glue this tab to the inside surface, even
with the bottom edge. This will form an open-ended box. You can also use tape or staples
to assemble the box. If you have trouble twisting your assembled box, go to the next page for detailed instructions. |
