hen we visited the North Carolina Outerbanks in September of 2001, we brought with us all three Wright gliders -- the 1900, 1901, and 1902. We lined them up and Jockeys Ridge State Park, creating a sight that not even Wilbur or Orville  saw -- all three gliders nose to tail. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to walk down the line and see the evolution the the Wright brothers aeronautical ideas.

We photographed this line-up from several different angles, then digital artist Michelangelo Flores photographed them again to create some virtual reality images. We have posted both our photos and Michelangelo's VR images here to share this wonderful sight with you.

Deja Vu

In case you think you've missed this incredible opportunity to see all three gliders in the same place at the same time, well, don't sweat it. We're going to get them all together on at least three occasions in the coming year.
  • October 5 through 8, 2002 -- And, of course, we'll have them all at the Centennial of Controlled Flight near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
  • July, 4, 2003* -- The Wright Kite, all three gliders, and our 1903 Flyer will be in the Airplane Parade in New Carlisle, Ohio.
  • July 17-20, 2003* -- We'll gather them together again at the Dayton Air Show in Dayton, Ohio, with the addition of the 1905 Flyer 3.
* Note: These events are endorsed by the United States Centennial of Flight.

Even if you can't make it to one of these events, you can see them all together right here, right now. As mentioned above,  Michelangelo Flores, who is no doubt a chip off the same block as his namesake, has put together several "virtual realities." (We call them "Michelangelo's worlds" here at WBAC.) These allow you to view the gliders as if you were standing in the midst of them, looking all around, up and down.  To experience these VR images, you'll need a QuickTime extension for your browser . If you don't have one, download it from the Apple web site. It's free!
